Transnational Baltic Compass -project aims to reinforce connection between agriculture and the environment and thus lead to more sustainable rural economy in the Baltic Sea countries. By supporting win-win solutions for agriculture, environment and business sectors, agriculture can be a model on how to build sustainability in the region. Baltic Compass is financed partly by EU and partly by its 23 partners which represent national authorities, interest organizations and innovation centres in Belarus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Sweden.
Baltic Compass answers to the need for a joint, transnational approach to reduce euthrophication – excessive nutrient enrichment of the Baltic Sea. Particularly, through increasing cooperation between the environmental and agricultural sectors, the project contributes to implementation of the Baltic Sea Action Plan approved by HELCOM and the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region, intergovernmental initiatives of the Baltic Sea countries and the European Union.
The project responds to the challenge to harmonize and broaden utilization of competence, technologies, policies and science that are already available in the region, but unevenly distributed and applied. As a strategic project, Baltic Compass will focus on activities which add value to ongoing projects, actions and policies. Baltic COMPASS will be a regional platform, where participants can together develop more efficient agro-environmental policies and share innovations and best practices. Baltic Compass ensures also that recent scientific knowledge about the environmental impact of different on-farm and river basin level measures is shared and applied across the Baltic Sea region.
Through close cooperation with its target groups – governments, national authorities dealing with land use issues, and interest organizations – the regional partnership will enable review and adaptation of relevant policies. The project runs from January 2010 until December 2012.
