WikiSCIEN is a new database for demonstrating SCIEN drainage technologies in the BSR. The database is a scientific forum for sharing information on leaching of substances from agricultural areas into waterways, and above all, about means to diminish leaching by SCIEN drainage technologies.
The web-based database application, where you can save your data, can be found here http://maps.luke.fi/geoserver/www/bc.html.
SCIEN is an acronym for Sustainable, Controlled, Intelligent, Environmentally friendly and Nutrient loss mitigating technologies. Such technologies are e.g. wetlands, controlled drainage systems, two-stage ditches and nutrient removal structures. Read more about the definition and description of the technologies here http://www.agro-technology-atlas.eu/techdescs.aspx?techgroup=1100.
The WikiSCIEN database contains short descriptions of case studies concerning mitigation of leaching losses from agricultural areas, and references to further information about the study, e.g. external links to project website, reports of the results, list of published articles etc. The database is open to research groups, institutions etc. which are willing to share their knowledge with other parties interested in sustainable agricultural drainage management.
All interested parties in the Baltic Sea Region countries are invited to add experimental sites, case studies and other drainage technology applications to WikiSCIEN. A poster introducing WikiSCIEN can be downloaded here. For optimal performance, use Firefox, Chrome or IE 8+ browsers.
The database is a product of Baltic Compact project (2013-2014) and produced by the MTT Agrifood Research Finland. (As of 1.1.2015, MTT is merged with three other organisations to form Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke), www.luke.fi/en.
