Assessment of the implementation of biogas as ‘agro-environmental measure’ on Bornholm
”50 % of the biogas potential in manure is lost within the first week or two, if it is not delivered to the biogas plant for processing!”.
This lesson was shared by one of the farmers involved with the biogas plant Biokraft A/S in Aakirkeby on Bornholm, the Danish island located in the Southern part of the Baltic Sea, close to the coast of Sweden. During the first days of June, Baltic COMPASS conducted, in collaboration with its sister project Baltic DEAL, an assessment of the opportunities and challenges to employing biogas as an agro-environmental measure, which improves the management of nutrients, produces renewable energy, and generates economic gains for the farmers and entrepreneurs involved.
The municipal-owned company Biokraft A/S had generously volunteered as a ‘case’ to enable an understanding of what actually happens in the implementation of national level policy goals in a concrete context. This assessment forms part of policy analysis conducted within work package 6 on governance and policy adaptation and will feed into upcoming policy dialogues across the Baltic Sea Region.
